Educational games for ages 2-7 that make learning genuinely fun. From tilt-controlled restaurant gameplay to rainbow spelling adventures.
Why We're Building This
North Star Learning began as a simple effort to create something genuinely fun for a young learner. The original goal was entertainment first — building experiences that felt like play. Along the way, it became clear how much meaningful learning could be embedded into games without ever feeling like a lesson.
The platform is intentionally free of ads. There is no advertising directed at children, no engagement traps, and no reward loops designed to maximize screen time. Every experience is built around play that naturally reinforces learning — spelling, counting, matching, drawing, reading, motor skills, and pattern recognition — across a wide range of game modes.
At the core of every game is a deliberately deep knowledge engine. The system currently includes over 500 structured items — with a target of 2,000 — each with pronunciations, definitions, attributes, difficulty ratings, and tags, all organized into a comprehensive taxonomy of categories and domains. This structure allows the same concept to support vocabulary in one game, spelling in another, and visual recognition in a third — without duplication or shallow repetition.
This foundation enables what comes next. The knowledge engine is designed to grow into robust performance tracking, supporting meaningful insight into how children learn: what concepts are mastered, where additional practice is needed, and how progress evolves over time. The long-term vision is for North Star Learning to become a serious tool for teaching, assessment, and developmental monitoring — built on a foundation that began with play, curiosity, and real-world learning needs.

The Family Restaurant
A game born from real life — and designed to be played together.
Where it came from
This game started at our dinner table. My wife, my daughter, and I play a pretend restaurant game — someone takes the order, someone cooks, and someone delivers the food. We act it all out, plates wobbling and all.
I built the digital version so families could play together the same way. Three phases, just like our real game — pick from the menu, prep the food, and carry it out on a tray by tilting your actual phone.
Order
The game starts at the menu. Customers pick what they want — burgers, pizza, drinks, desserts — from a hand-illustrated menu board. Kids practice reading, counting items, and building an order before sending it to the kitchen.
Customers choose from the illustrated menu
Cook
Orders come in and the kitchen heats up. Kids prepare each dish by dragging ingredients onto the plate, matching what the customer asked for. Get the order right and it's ready for delivery — miss something and the customer sends it back.
Plate up the order in the kitchen before it goes out
Deliver
This is where it gets physical. Pick up the tray and carry it to the table — by tilting your actual phone. The accelerometer makes the plates slide around for real. Tilt too far and the food crashes to the floor. Nail the delivery and the screen erupts in food fireworks.
Tilt your phone to balance the tray — plates slide, food crashes!
The Finger Paint Canvas
A creative space with real tools — not just a blank screen.
Drawing with rainbow mode and stickers
Three line weights — thin, medium, and thick — let kids switch between fine details and bold strokes. A full palette of bright colors is always one tap away, and Rainbow Mode automatically cycles through hues as you draw, turning every line into a color gradient.
The sticker tray pulls from the same knowledge library that powers every other game — all 500+ illustrations and growing. Drag a lion, a trumpet, or a fire truck onto the canvas and build a scene around it.
The Surprise Garden
Five plots of soft earth, three simple tools, and the quiet thrill of not knowing what's going to bloom.
A quiet place to grow things
The Surprise Garden is the calm, unhurried corner of North Star Learning. No timers, no scores, no wrong answers — just soil, seeds, and sunshine. There's a gentle rustling in the background, birdsong drifting through, and the satisfying little sounds of seeds dropping into earth. It feels like sitting in a real garden on a warm afternoon.
Kids learn real plant names, read fun facts about what they've grown, and discover that some things are worth being patient for. Every fifth harvest, the screen fills with butterflies.
Find the Garden
Tap into the Surprise Garden from the game menu and the screen opens into a quiet clearing — five empty plots arranged in soft earth, three tools waiting at the bottom: a seed bag, a watering can, and a little sun. The ambient forest audio fades in right away. You can almost feel the breeze.

Plant the Seeds
Drag the seed bag onto any empty plot and a seed drops in with a soft little thud. The soil shifts. What's inside? Nobody knows yet — that's the whole point. Kids fill all five plots one at a time, building anticipation with each one.
Dragging seeds into each garden plot
Water & Watch
Drag the watering can over a plot and water splashes down. A little sprout pushes through the soil. There's no rush — kids water at their own pace, one plot or all five, learning the quiet rhythm of taking care of something and watching it respond.
Watering the sprouts and watching them grow
Sunshine & Surprise
Drag the sun onto a watered plot and the magic happens. The plant blooms — and reveals what it is. A sunflower, a Venus flytrap, a pomegranate, wild lavender. Each bloom shows its name and a kid-friendly fun fact. Plants come in four rarity tiers, from common garden flowers to rare tropical surprises.
Every fifth harvest, the screen fills with butterflies. It's the little reward that makes kids want to keep planting — not because they have to, but because they want to see what comes next.
Sunshine reveals the bloom — and every fifth harvest brings butterflies

What happens by default? ▼
Out of the box, all scoring, progress, and settings stay on your phone in encrypted local storage. The app makes no network calls for analytics or tracking. No device IDs, no IP addresses, no data sent anywhere. It works fully offline.
What if I opt in to cloud features? ▼
You get richer learning metrics — progress across categories, strengths, and areas for practice. In exchange, we use your anonymized usage data to improve the app's teaching effectiveness and inform other EmersonDigital products. All data is stripped of personally identifiable information before it reaches us. It is never sold to advertisers or data aggregators, and never used for advertising. A parent or guardian must be the one to enable this — not the child.
